As the Best Man, the actual planning of the speech, the style of the comments and the content is your decision. There are some techniques and strategies that are proven to work, and some that are not as helpful. When you are preparing your speech as a Best Man consider the following:The best length for a speech is one to three minutes. It is important to never exceed 5 minutes, as most people will begin to lose interest after 3 minutes.Keep the speech from your heart. Remember that you are wishing a newly wed couple good fortune for the rest of their lives together.Remember that you will be required to give the speech during the dinner reception, so be sure to limit your alcohol consumption prior to the speech.Keep a glass of water handy, in case your mouth runs dry or you cough.Remember to speak at a slower pace than you normally do, especially if it is a large room and you are using a microphone.Memorize your speech and avoid reading from a script. This will make the speech more natural and will avoid rushing through the speech.A good idea is to prepare a small card with the keywords or main points of the speech to help you stay organized. If you become distracted or forget what is next, a simple glance down at the card will get you right back on track.Look at the audience as you speak and maintain eye contact with them. A good strategy is to move your eyes around the far edges of the group, and avoid just looking at one or two people.NEVER use slang or swear words. Remember that there are parents, grandparents and young people present that will find this type of content offensive. You can still tell the joke or story, just be careful with the vocabulary that you choose.Try to look as relaxed as possible. Think about having a conversation with the Groom, or with just a couple of friends. Remember that you aren't expected to be prefect, and don't worry if you forget a line or comment.Smile and be sincere, people will remember this more than the actual words that you said.Remember that the focus of the speech is on your relationship with the Groom and his wonderful new Bride. Be sure to end up the speech with the toast, and wish a long and prosperous life together. Make sure that you keep the speech focused on them, and avoid adding information about yourself that may distract from the Bride and Groom.Included in my "Best Man Secrets" e-book are some helpful rehearsal secrets along with 25 example best man speeches that can help you prepare a funny, personable, and entertaining best man speech!Check it out:Best Man SpeechesTo your speech success, Brian Johnson PS - If you like these tips you're going to LOVE our "Best Man Secrets" e-book - it's EVERYTHING you need to know about your upcoming best man speech and more!
